Chief Minister announced that projects worth ₹35,000 crore are currently underway under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
These developments aim to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the capital. The announcement followed a high-level meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways where ongoing and upcoming projects were reviewed. The ₹35,000 crore investment encompasses several key projects designed to transform Delhi’s transportation landscape. Among these is the construction of a 7-kilometre underground tunnel connecting Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, intended to streamline traffic flow and reduce travel time in the city’s southwestern corridor. Additionally, an elevated road project from INA to the Indira Gandhi International Airport is in progress, aiming to provide a direct and efficient route for commuters and travelers.
These initiatives are part of a broader infrastructure push by the central government, which has already completed projects worth ₹64,000 crore in Delhi. Furthermore, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for additional projects totaling ₹24,000 crore have been prepared, signaling continued efforts to modernize the city’s infrastructure. Chief Minister emphasized the importance of these projects in addressing Delhi’s persistent traffic challenges and pollution levels. She noted that the integration of advanced infrastructure would not only facilitate smoother transportation but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing vehicular emissions.
The NHAI has also undertaken the responsibility of developing a comprehensive drainage system along its roads in Delhi. This move aims to eliminate issues arising from the involvement of multiple agencies and ensure efficient maintenance of the city’s roadways. In addition to the major projects, the NHAI has approved road overbridge (RoB) and road underbridge (RuB) projects worth ₹150 crore for Delhi. These structures are expected to further ease traffic congestion and enhance safety for commuters.
The collaborative efforts between the central and state governments reflect a shared commitment to transforming Delhi into a more connected and sustainable city.
