Kanpur Metro Expands With Advanced Sustainable Trains

Kanpur Metro has taken a significant stride in enhancing urban transit with the inauguration of five new stations on Corridor I, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable and efficient public transportation.

This expansion, supported by cutting-edge trains and signalling technology from a leading global manufacturer, marks a critical milestone in reducing road congestion and promoting eco-friendly mobility across the region. The newly opened underground stations integrate advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) systems, which enable real-time train monitoring, ensuring safety and increasing service frequency. This sophisticated signalling infrastructure allows trains to run at speeds up to 80 km/h, providing commuters with faster and more reliable travel options compared to conventional road transport.

Central to this advancement is the use of trainsets manufactured domestically in Savli, Gujarat, aligning perfectly with the national initiatives to foster self-reliance through “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” programmes. The design and signalling components were developed through a collaborative network spanning Hyderabad, Gurugram, and international expertise from Bangkok, exemplifying a blend of local craftsmanship and global innovation. Each three-car trainset is equipped with state-of-the-art Flexx bogies and an energy-efficient Mitrac traction system. This design not only optimises energy consumption through regenerative braking but also contributes to reducing the overall carbon footprint of the metro operation. These features underline the metro’s role as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-fuel reliant transportation, thereby contributing to cleaner urban air quality and aligning with the city’s net-zero ambitions.

Currently, 40 trainsets are operational on the Kanpur Metro network. Upon full completion, the joint Agra-Kanpur metro corridor will feature 67 trainsets comprising 201 cars, significantly expanding capacity and connectivity in the region. This network expansion is expected to bolster economic activity, improve access to employment hubs, and offer equitable transit solutions for a diverse commuter base. The trains feature robust stainless-steel car bodies with modern amenities including air conditioning, automated doors, and passenger information displays. Importantly, the design incorporates dedicated spaces to facilitate access for passengers with reduced mobility, reflecting a gender-neutral and inclusive approach to urban transit infrastructure.

Kanpur Metro’s strategic development responds directly to the challenges of urban sprawl and traffic congestion by providing a reliable, high-frequency mass transit option. The shift to underground stations alleviates surface-level road pressure, supporting smoother traffic flows and contributing to safer, less polluted urban environments. This phase of the Kanpur Metro underscores the potential for metro systems to drive sustainable urban growth, fostering interconnected, equitable cities where accessibility and environmental responsibility are priorities. It highlights the importance of integrating advanced technology with local manufacturing capabilities to build resilient and future-ready public transport ecosystems.

As the metro network continues to expand, it sets a benchmark for other emerging urban centres in India striving to balance rapid development with sustainability goals. The collaborative approach involving indigenous manufacturing and international technological expertise positions Kanpur Metro as a flagship model for green and inclusive urban mobility.
