In a promising development for rail travellers in Kerala, the Indian Railways is considering the allocation of an extra Vande Bharat service for the state. Discussions are underway to deploy this high-speed train on either the Ernakulam-Bengaluru or Thiruvananthapuram-Coimbatore routes. This decision comes in the wake of the availability of a spare train within the Thiruvananthapuram Division, following the extension of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasaragode Vande Bharat Express to Mangaluru via Alappuzha.
The extension to Mangaluru is strategic, allowing for maintenance and repair works to be conducted there, negating the need for a spare rake and thus making it available for an additional service. While Kerala has long advocated for a Vande Bharat service on the Ernakulam-Bengaluru route, it has been hindered by the absence of a maintenance facility. However, there is positive news on the horizon as an electrified pit line is set to be commissioned in Ernakulam shortly. Recently, Hibi Eden MLA addressed a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscoring the importance of a Bengaluru-Ernakulam service. Emphasising the utility of a service departing from Bengaluru at 5 am for numerous rail commuters, the letter reflects the pressing demand for enhanced connectivity.
In a parallel effort, Palakkad MP V K Sreekandan and Coimbatore MLA Vanathia Sreenivas, also the National President of Mahila Morcha, have approached the railway minister advocating for a Coimbatore-Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat service. Presently, the Sabari Express at 8 am is the next daily train to Thiruvananthapuram from Coimbatore after the early morning departure of the Island Express at 3 am. As the discussions unfold, the potential addition of another Vande Bharat service for Kerala signifies a step towards improved rail connectivity, addressing the growing demand for efficient and timely travel options in the region. The Railways’ strategic considerations and responsiveness to regional demands are crucial elements shaping the future landscape of rail travel in Kerala.
