Global Universities Set to Establish Campuses in Navi Mumbai

The Maharashtra government has granted Letters of Intent (LOIs) to five esteemed international universities. This initiative is part of the state’s ambitious plan to develop a 250-acre ‘EduCity’ near the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, aiming to provide world-class education within India.

The universities receiving the LOIs include the University of Aberdeen (UK), University of York (UK), University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), and Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy). These institutions are expected to commence operations within 18 months, offering programs at fees approximately 25-30% lower than their international counterparts, thereby making global education more accessible to Indian students . Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that this development aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages the establishment of foreign university campuses in India. He highlighted that the ‘EduCity’ will not only host these universities but also foster a thriving ecosystem of innovation, research, and industry collaboration .

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan noted that this initiative positions India as a destination for global education, enhancing the country’s stature in the international academic community. He also mentioned that discussions are underway with additional foreign universities to expand the ‘EduCity’ further . The establishment of these campuses is expected to create a ripple effect, encouraging other international institutions to consider India as a viable location for their operations. This move is anticipated to contribute significantly to the country’s educational landscape, offering students opportunities to pursue globally recognized degrees without the financial burden of studying abroad.

As the ‘EduCity’ project progresses, it is poised to become a cornerstone in Maharashtra’s vision of fostering a knowledge-driven economy, attracting international talent, and providing students with a diverse and inclusive educational experience.
