Delhi is set to witness a significant transformation in its urban mobility landscape as the central government fast-tracks several major infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and reducing pollution levels across the capital. These initiatives encompass both the expansion of the Delhi Metro network and the development of key road corridors, reflecting a concerted effort to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable urban development.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a notable milestone with the completion of a 790-meter underground tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlaqabad railway colony station on the Tughlaqabad-Aerocity corridor, part of the Phase IV expansion known as the Golden Line. This breakthrough, accomplished using a tunnel boring machine, marks a significant step towards the realization of the Golden Line, which is expected to be operational by mid-2026. The line will connect key areas such as IGNOU, Chhatarpur Mandir, and Aerocity, improving accessibility and reducing travel time across southern Delhi. In parallel, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved several major road infrastructure projects designed to ease traffic flow and enhance connectivity. A 20-kilometer signal-free elevated corridor is planned between AIIMS and Indira Gandhi International Airport, extending to Gurgaon.
This project, estimated at approximately ₹5,000 crore, aims to streamline traffic and reduce congestion in the southern part of the city. Additionally, a 5-kilometer signal-free tunnel is proposed between Nelson Mandela Road and the Shiv Murti–Mahipalpur intersection, with an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. These corridors are expected to significantly cut down travel time and ease bottlenecks in key urban stretches. Another critical development is the construction of an interchange at the Kalindi Kunj intersection near the Okhla Barrage, where the Delhi-Noida Road meets the Agra Canal Road. This 500-meter road project, with an estimated cost of ₹500 crore, aims to alleviate traffic congestion at one of Delhi’s busiest intersections. The feasibility study for this project was completed in 2022, and construction is expected to commence shortly.
These infrastructure projects are not only focused on improving traffic flow but also on addressing environmental concerns. The elevated corridors are designed to minimize land acquisition and preserve existing green spaces. Moreover, the integration of the Delhi Metro expansion with the road network promotes a shift towards public transportation, potentially reducing the number of private vehicles on the road and contributing to lower emissions. The government’s emphasis on sustainable urban development is also evident in the design of these projects, which incorporate features such as energy-efficient lighting, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and provisions for future green spaces. These initiatives align with the broader goal of creating a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and equitable urban environment.
