The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a Special Monsoon Sanitation Drive. The initiative, announced by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, aims to enhance cleanliness and public health safety across the city. Commissioner Karnan commenced the drive with an inspection of sanitation efforts in areas surrounding the Fever Hospital in Nallakunta.
During the visit, he emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between sanitation workers, local residents, and elected representatives to ensure the success of the program. “Monsoon brings with it the risk of disease outbreaks, and GHMC has rolled out this special drive to ensure cleanliness and public safety,” Karnan stated. To improve efficiency and local response, Commissioner Karnan issued specific instructions to the Additional Commissioner, highlighting the need to deploy sanitation workers across different localities rather than concentrating them at a single site. This approach is expected to address sanitation challenges more effectively and promptly.
The initiative is part of GHMC’s broader plan to tackle waterlogging, garbage accumulation, and vector-borne disease risks throughout the rainy season. The corporation has mobilized additional resources to strengthen its sanitation efforts, including the deployment of 778 vehicles and the engagement of 960 team leaders and 30 supervisory officers for 5,733 colonies within its limits. In addition to traditional sanitation measures, GHMC is employing biological controls to combat vector-borne diseases. The corporation has introduced Gambusia fish in freshwater ponds and released oil balls in polluted lakes to control mosquito larvae and the regeneration of water hyacinths. Furthermore, a rapid response system has been established to deal with positive cases of diseases like dengue. For every confirmed case, indoor spraying of pyrethrum is conducted within a 50-house radius to eliminate adult mosquitoes.
The GHMC’s comprehensive approach underscores the importance of community involvement and inter-departmental coordination in maintaining public health and hygiene during the monsoon season. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the sanitation teams and adhere to guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of infectious diseases. As Hyderabad continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the monsoon, the GHMC’s Special Monsoon Sanitation Drive stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment.
