Delhi Weather Alert Thunderstorms and Rain Forecasted

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are under a yellow alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until Thursday. The alert, effective from Wednesday, indicates that wind speeds may reach 50 to 60 km/h, particularly during the nighttime hours. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 34°C, while the minimum is likely to stay close to 27°C, offering some relief from recent heat spells.

The IMD has urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. The forecast includes light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and thundersqualls, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 to 60 km/h, especially during the nighttime hours. The IMD has also highlighted the potential dangers associated with thunderstorms, including intense lightning in open spaces, traffic jams, and delays to flights and trains. In its official advisory, the IMD has strongly advised people working outdoors, such as farmers and labourers, to suspend all activity and seek immediate shelter. The public has been urged to unplug electrical devices, keep their distance from metal structures, and avoid taking calls on mobile phones or any other devices when in outdoor open areas during lightning. Additionally, seeking shelter under trees is strongly discouraged.

The recent heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging and severe traffic jams in various parts of the city, including near Indira Gandhi International Airport. The downpour has also disrupted air travel, resulting in several flight diversions. The IMD attributes these conditions to moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal and a western disturbance. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather information from the IMD website and credible news sources. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary actions to ensure public safety.
