Kanpur has made significant strides in improving its air quality, moving from 17th place in the 2023-24 clean air survey to 5th place in 2024-25. This remarkable improvement is attributed to a series of proactive measures implemented by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
One of the standout initiatives is the afforestation of 110 hectares of land using the Miyawaki method. This Japanese technique involves planting native species in dense clusters, allowing them to grow 10 times faster and 30 times denser than traditional methods. The KMC has removed encroachments from green belts and established urban forests in areas like Vijay Nagar Traffic Park, Chhalesar, and Govind Nagar, contributing to a significant increase in the city’s green cover . In addition to enhancing green cover, the KMC is developing a ‘Waste to Wonder Park’ that transforms waste materials into art installations. This initiative not only beautifies the city but also promotes recycling and waste management practices among residents.
To combat dust pollution, the KMC has deployed mechanical road sweepers and water sprinklers across the city. These measures have been effective in reducing particulate matter (PM) levels, contributing to the improved air quality rankings. The KMC is also focusing on the beautification of parks such as Nana Rao Park and Kargil Park. These efforts involve the use of waste materials for landscaping and the introduction of sustainable practices to maintain these green spaces. Kanpur’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recognized the city for its outstanding performance in air quality and pollution prevention efforts during the final quarter of the fiscal year 2023-24. The KMC received Rs 225 crore from the 15th Finance Commission for air pollution prevention, which was utilized for projects like interlocking non-metal roads and establishing green belts at several junctions .
Looking ahead, the KMC plans to continue its environmental initiatives. Upcoming projects include further afforestation using the Miyawaki method, expansion of the ‘Waste to Wonder Park’, and the installation of additional road cleaning equipment. These efforts aim to sustain and further enhance the city’s air quality and overall environmental health.
