Pune district authorities have mandated comprehensive structural audits of all potentially hazardous infrastructure within seven days. This directive encompasses a wide range of structures, including old bridges, causeways, roads, buildings, forts, railway bridges, and advertisement hoardings. The final reports are to be submitted to the district disaster management office within 10 days.
The urgency of this action follows a tragic incident earlier this week, where the collapse of a bridge over the Indrayani River in Talegaon Dabhade resulted in multiple fatalities. This event has underscored the critical need for rigorous safety assessments and timely interventions to prevent such occurrences in the future. To manage risks during the monsoon, over 500 tourist spots are under scrutiny.
Tehsildars have been directed to install warning signages and restrict access where necessary. Unauthorized hoardings along the wari procession route must be removed immediately. A panel may be formed to supervise structural audit efforts, particularly in accident-prone zones like Ahilyanagar-Kalyan highway and tourist spots such as Nane Ghat and Bhimashankar. Mock drills will be conducted, control rooms will operate round the clock, and critical infrastructure including electric poles and flood-prone villages will undergo inspections.
Increased deployment of police, lifeguards, and educational efforts on landslide warnings are also part of the action plan. These measures reflect a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness, aiming to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the challenging monsoon season. The district administration’s swift and coordinated response underscores its commitment to public safety and proactive risk management.
