In a significant stride towards enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure, the Reay Road Cable-Stayed Road Over Bridge (ROB), positioned as a pivotal east-west connector, is approaching its final stages of construction and is poised to be operational by May 2024.
This engineering marvel, spearheaded by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), stands as the second cable-stayed bridge in Mumbai, following the iconic Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL).
The distinctive feature of the Reay Road Cable-Stayed ROB lies in its innovative centre pylon system, where stay cables elegantly ascend from the central spine girder, reducing the need for extensive piers and foundations. This avant-garde design approach, coupled with meticulous planning by MahaRail, has paved the way for a streamlined construction process. As of the latest update, MRIDC has achieved an impressive 70% completion of the construction, with foundational work reaching its conclusion. Simultaneously, the launch of girders and the progression of superstructure work are currently underway. MRIDC officials express optimism, asserting that with the expeditious clearance of the Right of Way (ROW), the bridge is anticipated to meet its revised deadline of May 2024, affording the city a vital transportation artery.
The term ‘Right of Way’ (ROW), denoting the legal precedence to traverse a road ahead of other users, assumes paramount importance in the timely realisation of this project. Collaborative efforts involving Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) and Central Railway are in motion to facilitate the relocation of a ticket counter and 15 GI sheds of a workshop. Furthermore, the clearance of 130 huts signifies a significant stride towards ensuring unimpeded progress.
In pursuit of seamless execution, MRIDC is currently engaged in discussions with Central Railway to secure necessary blocks in March, further streamlining the construction timeline. The proactive approach adopted by MahaRail in addressing relocation challenges underscores their commitment to expeditious project delivery. With the Reay Road Cable-Stayed Bridge nearing completion, it stands poised to alleviate traffic congestion, fortifying Mumbai’s infrastructure backbone and symbolising a testament to progressive urban development.
