Minister sets deadline for Hassan railway land acquisition

Karnataka’s Hassan district, the Union Minister of State for Railways has directed officials to expedite land acquisition and project implementation in a push to fast-track railway infrastructure. With 503 acres needed for the Belur–Hassan railway line, the minister has set a one-month deadline for land transfer. Other directives include station upgrades, landslide control, and improved commuter amenities across the region’s railway network.

The minister instructed railway and revenue authorities to acquire and transfer 503 acres of land for the Belur–Hassan railway line within a month. During a high-level meeting with key departments including Railways, KPTCL, and RITES, he stressed that tenders must be floated promptly. Officials were told to complete the project within two years, underscoring the need for accountability and progress in regional rail development.

Officials from KPTCL were directed to complete work on power lines and substations in sync with railway timelines. The minister also urged immediate attention to the landslide-prone Sakleshpur section, asking for stabilisation measures within four months. These issues have repeatedly disrupted train operations, and addressing them is essential for ensuring safer and uninterrupted rail travel along the region’s key hilly routes, especially during monsoon months.

Station modernisation was prioritised, with Arasikere, Hassan, and Sakleshpur stations receiving sanctioned funds of ₹34 crore, ₹22 crore, and ₹26 crore respectively. Local MPs and MLAs demanded better connectivity, including a new railway line between Dudda and Tiptur, additional passenger services to Mysuru, and halts for the Hassan–Solapur Express at multiple towns. These requests highlight growing public demand for improved last-mile and intercity connectivity.

MLAs highlighted neglected rural infrastructure, calling for the modernisation of Kadur, Birur, and Alur stations. Concerns were also raised about flooding in underpasses during rains at several village crossings. A demand for double compensation for farmers affected by land acquisition was also put forth, reinforcing the need to balance infrastructure growth with fair treatment of impacted communities. Stakeholders stressed that timely maintenance would improve commuter safety and accessibility.

The minister’s directives aim to transform Hassan’s railway infrastructure through fast-tracked land acquisition, station upgrades, and safety measures. By addressing commuter concerns and rural station neglect, the initiatives promise to enhance regional connectivity and passenger experience. However, success will depend on coordination between agencies and inclusive implementation.
