Govt Plans ₹10cr Bicholim-Dodamarg Route Upgrade

In a move to address growing traffic pressure, the Goa government has proposed a ₹10 crore road project along the Sanquelim-Bicholim-Dodamarg route. This new road, planned parallel to the existing Bicholim bypass, aims to provide a smoother route for interstate trucks and local travellers. The development comes amid increasing demand for upgraded infrastructure in northern Goa’s key commuting corridors.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to launch a new road project to enhance mobility between Sanquelim, Bicholim, and Dodamarg. The proposed stretch is aimed at easing the load on saturated existing roads by offering an alternative for interstate traffic, especially trucks and buses. Locals from Bicholim and Dodamarg also frequently use this corridor for daily commuting and market access, underlining the need for better infrastructure.

The upcoming road will be funded by the state government and is estimated to cost ₹10 crore. It will run parallel to the current Bicholim bypass, which is already functional but witnessing a surge in vehicle volume. This new stretch is being designed to absorb excess traffic and reduce congestion along the main thoroughfares, further supporting economic and transit activity between Goa and neighbouring Maharashtra.

The region’s transport network has seen notable upgrades in recent years. The Bicholim bypass, a ₹90 crore four-lane road spanning 4.6 km from Bordem to Sarvan, opened last year and now serves as a major alternative route for heavy vehicles. However, work on its service roads is still in progress. The bypass was initially proposed over a decade ago but only began construction in late 2021.

Meanwhile, another significant project underway is the Assonora bypass in Bicholim, part of state highway 1. This 2.9 km four-lane stretch is being built at a cost of ₹160 crore and is expected to be completed by 2026. Once ready, it will enhance connectivity between Bardez and Bicholim districts. These back-to-back projects reflect the state’s broader push towards building a modern, decongested road network in northern Goa.

With existing roads nearing saturation and regional connectivity becoming critical, the government’s ₹10 crore Sanquelim-Bicholim-Dodamarg project signals an essential step forward. Alongside ongoing bypass work, this new road is set to transform travel for both locals and interstate commuters. As construction timelines unfold, the region is gradually paving the way for a safer, faster, and more efficient transport network across Goa’s northern districts.
