Hyderabad Traffic Police Plan Tech-Based Crackdown on Violations

Hyderabad’s traffic police outlined a tech-driven strategy to manage congestion, improve road safety, and enforce discipline. With over 90 lakh vehicles in circulation, officials are deploying drone surveillance, PTZ cameras, and artificial intelligence to monitor key junctions. Simultaneously, field studies, relocation of bottlenecks, and stricter penalties aim to curb violations like wrong-side and underage driving.

Hyderabad’s traffic department is leveraging modern tools like drones, high-rise PTZ cameras, and AI-powered analytics to manage congestion and enhance response time. These devices enable real-time detection of accidents, breakdowns, and bottlenecks without relying solely on citizen complaints. Officials believe this transition to smarter enforcement will boost efficiency, especially in high-traffic corridors. Plans are underway to install these systems in more congested stretches across the city.

Weekly markets, obstructive statues, and religious structures on carriageways have been identified as chronic contributors to jams. Officials say they are coordinating with civic bodies to relocate such markets and barriers. In parallel, U-turns are being re-evaluated through field studies to optimise placement, keeping safety and accessibility in mind. However, limited road width continues to constrain efforts, particularly in older parts of the city.

On enforcement, Hyderabad’s traffic police are tightening action against underage and wrong-side driving. Over 4,000 cases involving minors have already been booked, with parents also facing legal consequences. Authorities are seeking vehicle registration cancellation in serious offences and imposing stricter penalties under the Motor Vehicle Act. Offenders risk losing license eligibility until the age of 25, while some vehicles are barred from road use for a year.

Despite technological advances, challenges remain in implementing lane discipline and automated challans. Varying lane widths and lack of uninterrupted stretches hamper consistent enforcement. Officials are exploring AI-powered solutions to enable better surveillance and violation tracking using existing CCTV networks. Meanwhile, coordination committees continue to address issues like waterlogging and road expansions. The department also promotes public engagement through training programmes and awareness drives.

Hyderabad’s traffic police are moving towards a more data-driven, technology-first approach to ease urban congestion and promote road safety. However, systemic challenges like insufficient manpower, irregular road design, and civic indifference demand greater cooperation across departments and with the public. While tech tools can assist enforcement, sustainable solutions will require holistic planning, consistent civic engagement, and stronger policy-level support for Hyderabad’s evolving mobility needs.
