Indore drenched as intense rainfall submerges roads

After a prolonged dry spell, Indore was battered by heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon, flooding roads and several low-lying areas. In just one hour, the eastern part of the city received nearly 48 mm of rainfall. The intense downpour disrupted daily life with traffic snarls, power outages, and knee-deep water accumulation reported from multiple localities across the city.

A steady drizzle in the morning quickly turned into a sharp downpour by noon, plunging many parts of the city into chaos. Residents in low-lying neighbourhoods reported water entering homes, while vehicles moved slowly through submerged streets. Traffic lights malfunctioned and visibility dropped drastically, forcing commuters to switch on headlights in broad daylight. The sudden burst of rain overwhelmed local drains, triggering flooding in both residential and commercial pockets.

Despite the intensity of Tuesday’s rain, Indore’s cumulative rainfall for the season remains below average. Meteorological experts reported that the city has received only 96.25 mm of rain since June 1—short of the expected 125 mm by this point. The latest spell, however, is part of an active system that may help the region catch up over the next few days, bridging the rainfall deficit caused by an unusually dry start to the monsoon season.

Temperature readings showed a significant dip, with the maximum recorded at 27.6°C—six degrees below normal—offering relief from earlier heatwaves. The minimum hovered around 22.8°C, also below seasonal averages. This cool spell has been welcomed by locals, though the widespread disruption due to poor drainage and infrastructure planning has renewed concerns about the city’s flood preparedness in the monsoon months.

The regional weather office has issued alerts predicting continued rainfall in Indore and surrounding districts like Dewas and Dhar over the next few days. The rainfall is linked to a trough line affecting central Madhya Pradesh. Experts suggest isolated heavy showers may continue until the weekend, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid waterlogged areas while civic bodies attempt to address drainage issues.

Indore’s sudden return to monsoon showers has brought both relief and disruption. While cooler temperatures have eased the heat, flooded roads, power cuts, and traffic snarls exposed the city’s infrastructure vulnerabilities. With more rain forecast, officials and residents alike are on alert. Authorities are being urged to improve stormwater management to prevent recurring chaos during the peak monsoon period in central Madhya Pradesh.
