Kerala on orange alert with rivers rising and landslips

Heavy rainfall continues to pound Kerala, triggering widespread disruption across several districts. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange and yellow alerts, authorities are on high alert as rivers overflow, homes flood, and landslips increase. Districts like Ernakulam, Wayanad, and Kozhikode are experiencing severe weather-related challenges, prompting school closures and safety warnings across the state.

The relentless downpour has led to rising water levels in rivers and reservoirs. In Wayanad, the Kalloor River has breached its banks while landslips continue to be reported from vulnerable hilly terrains. Kozhikode’s Kakkayam Dam recorded dangerously high levels, adding to regional concerns. In Muvattupuzha, homes have been inundated, forcing families to evacuate or shift to higher ground. Authorities are monitoring these regions closely, urging residents to remain cautious.

According to IMD forecasts, Kerala will face continued heavy rainfall over the next three days. Orange alerts have been issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad, warning of very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, yellow alerts are in place across the remaining districts, with strong winds and moderate to heavy rain expected. Winds are forecast to reach up to 50 kmph in coastal and central regions.

In response to worsening conditions, district administrations have declared holidays for all schools and educational institutions in Idukki, Thrissur, and Wayanad. High wave alerts are also in effect along the Kerala coast, particularly from Kunzhathur to Kotte Kunnu, including Kasaragod and Kannur. Waves up to 3.3 metres are expected, prompting warnings to fisherfolk and coastal communities to avoid marine activities until conditions improve.

Disaster management teams are deployed across sensitive locations, and officials are urging people to avoid riversides, hill slopes, and the sea during the alert period. Emergency services remain on standby, and shelters are being prepared in flood-prone areas. Authorities stress the importance of following official advisories and remaining indoors unless absolutely necessary. Continuous monitoring of vulnerable regions will continue throughout the monsoon surge.

Kerala’s early and intense monsoon has brought both relief and risk. While reservoirs fill and water tables rise, the accompanying flooding, landslides, and high tides present serious dangers. With alerts in place and response mechanisms activated, the focus now is on public safety and damage mitigation. Residents are urged to stay updated through official sources and prioritise safety over routine travel or activities during this critical period.
