India Unified Energy Stack Transforms Power Sector and Boosts Clean Energy Growth

India has launched an ambitious effort to digitally unify its power sector through a new initiative called the India Energy Stack (IES). A dedicated task force has been set up to develop a secure, interoperable, and consumer-friendly digital platform aimed at transforming power delivery, grid stability, and renewable energy integration as the nation progresses toward its clean energy and economic goals.


As India scales up renewable energy, electrifies transport, and empowers consumers to participate in power markets, the need for a seamless digital backbone becomes crucial. The India Energy Stack is envisioned as the digital public infrastructure (DPI) that connects all elements of the energy ecosystem—utilities, assets, users, and transactions—through unique IDs and open APIs. This ecosystem will improve service delivery, transparency, and innovation across the entire electricity value chain.


One of the key pain points in India’s current power system is fragmentation. From legacy grid management tools to inconsistent consumer data platforms, the lack of integration hinders efficiency. The India Energy Stack proposes to solve this by offering real-time, consent-based data sharing and analytical tools that improve decision-making and reduce technical losses. Experts believe this is especially vital for improving DISCOM health and grid resilience under rising demand.


A 12-month Proof of Concept (PoC) has been announced to demonstrate real-world applications of the India Energy Stack. The PoC will include piloting a Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP), an analytics-driven interface to support power companies, regulators, and consumers with actionable insights. The goal is to use modular tools to monitor electricity flows, demand surges, and renewable integration, all while keeping consumer data secure and consent-driven.


The task force, comprising technical and regulatory experts, will guide the IES rollout from blueprint to nationwide scale-up. The initiative aims to replicate the success of Aadhaar and UPI in the identity and payments domains for the power sector. If successful, the IES could redefine how Indians consume, monitor, and even trade electricity in a decentralised, climate-resilient grid—an essential step as the country eyes net-zero goals by 2070.

With the launch of the India Energy Stack initiative, the power sector is poised for a digital revolution. Experts see the platform as a critical lever to ensure energy efficiency, consumer empowerment, and climate responsibility. As India’s energy demand rises and its clean energy targets sharpen, a smart, secure, and unified digital grid will be key to managing the transformation ahead.
