Pune Airport’s State-of-the-Art Terminal Set for Inauguration on March 10

In a major milestone for Pune Airport, the much-anticipated new terminal building, constructed at a cost of Rs 423 crore, is scheduled for inauguration on March 10. The grand unveiling will be conducted via videoconferencing by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Despite earlier criticism regarding perceived delays attributed to the Prime Minister’s availability, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has affirmed the impending inauguration.

The expansive terminal, spanning an impressive built-up area of 51,595 square metres, stands as a testament to modern aviation infrastructure. Developed on land acquired from the Indian Air Force, the terminal showcases not only architectural prowess but also a reflection of Maharashtra’s rich cultural heritage. The design incorporates elements such as a Shaniwar Wada-like façade and various cultural and historical symbols, both inside and outside the airport, aiming to offer passengers a glimpse into the state’s diversity. Following the inauguration, the AAI plans to conduct comprehensive safety tests at the airport, a crucial phase expected to last four to six weeks. Once successfully completed, the new terminal will be ready to commence flight operations. Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, during a January 2024 inspection, had assured a swift inauguration within two to three weeks.

The upgraded terminal boasts a significantly enhanced passenger handling capacity, increasing from the existing 7.2 million passengers per annum to an impressive 12 million passengers per annum. The investment in this modern infrastructure aligns with the broader vision of enhancing air travel efficiency, passenger experience, and catering to the growing demands of Pune’s air traffic. As the eagerly awaited inauguration approaches, the new terminal signifies a substantial leap in Pune Airport’s capabilities, promising a seamless and culturally enriched experience for millions of passengers annually.
