BMC Applauds Maharashtra Government’s Green Initiative with 300-Acre ‘Central Park’ in Mumbai

In a commendable move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has expressed appreciation for the Maharashtra government’s decision to carve out a sprawling ‘Central Park’ spanning nearly 300 acres in south Mumbai.

This green haven is set to encompass 175 acres of the Coastal Garden, reclaimed from the Arabian Sea, coupled with an additional 120 acres from the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, recently returned to the State Government by the Royal Western India Turf Club.

Officials revealed that the Royal Western India Turf Club, in its Extraordinary General Meeting on January 30, saw an overwhelming 76.24% of its members voting in favour of permanently handing over the leased 120 acres to the state government/BMC. Concurrently, the state Cabinet has granted approval to the BMC’s proposal, renewing the 30-year lease of the remaining 91 acres to the Royal Western India Turf Club until 2053. This ensures the continuation of RWITC activities on the designated land. The visionary project transforms reclaimed coastal areas and a historic racecourse into a green oasis, aligning with global trends promoting urban green spaces. The ‘Central Park’ initiative underscores a strategic blend of environmental conservation and recreational amenities for the citizens of Mumbai. The BMC lauds the collaborative efforts between the state government and the Royal Western India Turf Club, emphasising the long-term benefits that this extensive green space will bring to the city’s residents. As Mumbai continues to evolve, this initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable urban planning, enhancing the quality of life and fostering a healthier, greener metropolis.
