Mumbai coast to Himachal hills braces for active monsoon wave and thunderstorms

A fresh wave of monsoon activity is sweeping across India this week, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasted in key regions including Goa, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of central India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts, including a yellow alert for Goa and storm warnings for Delhi, as weather systems intensify. An active monsoon trough, along with cyclonic circulations over Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, is driving this nationwide pattern.

Heavy rain continued to pound coastal Goa, triggering a yellow alert through July 7, as Konkan and western Maharashtra hills brace for further downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also flagged very heavy rainfall risks in Gujarat, Ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra, and Saurashtra-Kutch. According to authorities, high surface winds and turbulent seas are likely to persist across the western coast, urging caution in maritime and nearshore activities. Meanwhile, Delhi’s weather remains relatively subdued, with the national capital forecasted to see light showers and isolated thunderstorms. The IMD attributed this broad weather pattern to a combination of cyclonic circulations, monsoon troughs, and active moisture-laden winds sweeping in from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Experts note that such conditions signal a strong mid-phase monsoon, contributing to rainfall across central, north-western, and southern India. The heavy rainfall, however, is expected to impact normal life in vulnerable low-lying and hilly areas.

In central India, multiple alerts are in place as heavy rain is expected across Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha, with potential escalation into red alerts in specific zones. Experts point to dual circulations in Madhya Pradesh and northern Odisha, intensifying the wet spell in the region. Further north, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh will see intermittent heavy showers through the week, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. In the northeast, the states of Meghalaya and Assam are set for extremely heavy falls, especially between July 5 and 6. Meanwhile, the southern peninsula will also experience increased rainfall activity. Isolated heavy showers are expected over Kerala, Mahe, and Karnataka, with strong winds prevailing along the coastal stretches. The IMD forecasts widespread rainfall for the next seven days, confirming the monsoon’s active phase. Commuters, farmers, and tourism stakeholders have been urged to monitor local updates and advisories.

With active monsoon systems firmly in place, most Indian regions are likely to witness a sustained wet spell through the first half of July. From the hills of Uttarakhand to the beaches of Goa and the plains of Madhya Pradesh, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds may disrupt transport and increase the risk of flooding in vulnerable pockets. Experts stress the need for timely precautions, especially in landslide-prone and low-lying areas. While the rains are welcome for agriculture, authorities urge citizens to remain alert and plan travel and outdoor activities accordingly as regional alerts remain in force until July 8.
