Coimbatore Unveils 2041 Master Plan to Guide Sustainable Urban Growth

Coimbatore has launched its ambitious Master Plan 2041, a GIS-based development roadmap covering 1,531 sq km across the municipal corporation, four municipalities, 21 town panchayats, and 66 revenue villages. The plan was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin in Chennai, alongside Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin and other senior officials.

Prepared by the Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) with input from over 40 state agencies, the framework sets out zoning, infrastructure, and land use strategies to accommodate a projected population of nearly 6 million by 2041. Notably, the plan reduces agricultural land allocation from 59% (1994 plan) to 33%, unlocking space for urban development, including a ring road, improved sewage systems, and industrial corridors.

Coimbatore’s business and civic leaders welcomed the clarity and data precision the plan offers. Rajesh B. Lund of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, noted its utility for investors and urban planners. Meanwhile, S. R. Arvind Kumar of CREDAI urged the government to allow for flexible revisions based on public feedback.

The full plan will soon be made available online following an official government order, allowing stakeholders to review and submit suggestions.
