Andhra Pradesh Braces For Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Till July 11

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for several parts of Andhra Pradesh, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds from July 7 to 11. The forecast covers both coastal and inland regions, including North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), and Rayalaseema. With surface winds expected to reach up to 50 kmph, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious during this period of unstable monsoon activity.

According to the IMD, lower tropospheric westerly winds continue to dominate Andhra Pradesh’s atmospheric profile, fuelling thunderstorm formation across the state. The forecast predicts that lightning activity and high wind speeds of 40–50 kmph may impact daily life in multiple districts across NCAP, SCAP, Yanam, and Rayalaseema. These unstable conditions are expected to be most intense during late afternoons and evenings when heat and moisture convergence peak. Experts warn that such patterns could increase risks of power outages, tree falls, and minor structural damage. Residents, particularly in coastal and low-lying inland areas, have been urged to stay indoors during thunderstorm activity and avoid water-logged or open spaces. Agricultural activities may also face temporary disruption, with wind-sensitive crops potentially vulnerable to lodging or spoilage. As the monsoon system remains active over the Bay of Bengal, further atmospheric instability is expected in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal belt over the next few days.

Meteorologists monitoring the westerly troughs influencing Andhra Pradesh’s climate suggest the prevailing low-pressure conditions could intensify further depending on sea surface temperatures and wind shear. The state has already witnessed scattered rainfall in some districts, but this round of atmospheric instability carries the added risk of dry lightning—where lightning strikes occur with little or no accompanying rain. Urban areas such as Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada may face increased stormwater drain loads, while more rural and inland zones like Kurnool and Chittoor could be at risk of temporary communication or electricity disruptions. Public safety advisories have stressed lightning safety, including avoiding metallic structures, staying away from tall trees, and refraining from using mobile phones in open areas during storm alerts. Authorities also caution against unnecessary travel during the warning period. Real-time monitoring by IMD and civic disaster management units is expected to help mitigate risks as the monsoon progresses.

As Andhra Pradesh enters a turbulent monsoon phase, the IMD’s five-day alert underscores the state’s climatic vulnerability to high-velocity winds and lightning-prone storms.
