Indian Railways Denies Solar Panel Installation Between Railway Tracks

A widely circulated social media post claiming that Indian Railways is installing removable solar panels between railway tracks has been debunked as misinformation. The project, which went viral for being labelled a “game-changing” Indian initiative by an alleged domestic startup, has now been confirmed to be a Swiss venture, not Indian.

The claim originated from a user post asserting that an Indian company named Sun-Ways was deploying solar panels along railway lines in India. The post touted significant energy generation potential, claiming it could power over 200,000 homes annually. However, an image used in the viral post led investigators to the original source—a project currently underway in Switzerland. A detailed verification process involving reverse image searches and keyword tracing revealed that Sun-Ways is actually a Switzerland-based startup, and the solar panel initiative is being piloted along a 100-metre track in Buttes, western Switzerland. The project is currently in the trial phase and is being implemented without disrupting train operations.

No Indian agency, including Indian Railways, has announced or initiated any such installation of solar panels between railway tracks. A search across multiple government portals and credible media sources yielded no information about such a development occurring in India. Officials confirmed that while Indian Railways has undertaken several green energy and solar initiatives—such as rooftop solar panels on stations and trains—there is no plan involving track-based solar panel systems at this time. Experts called the social media post misleading and cautioned users against sharing unverified information that may misrepresent India’s sustainability progress.

This incident underscores the growing challenge of misinformation in the age of viral social media content. While renewable energy innovations are welcomed globally, it is critical to attribute credit accurately and maintain public trust in authentic green transitions being undertaken in India.
