Chennai Approves ₹7,430 Crore for Statewide Roads and Bridges Infrastructure

In a decisive move to modernise Tamil Nadu’s transport infrastructure, two government orders have sanctioned projects worth ₹7,430 crore for road and bridge development across the state. The plan includes constructing 100 high-level bridges and upgrading over 3,200 km of highways under multiple schemes. These strategic interventions aim to address long-pending regional demands, improve rural connectivity, and enhance highway efficiency, promising a significant boost to local economies, safety, and access between remote and urban growth centres.

The rural development initiative, backed by field verification and community-driven inputs, prioritises the construction of 100 high-level bridges across Tamil Nadu at a cost of ₹505.56 crore. These bridges, selected from a wider proposal involving over 300 locations, are intended to reduce travel time and enhance accessibility between villages and commercial hubs. The selections reflect long-pending local requests and pressing mobility needs, ensuring that infrastructure growth is aligned with real ground-level demands. According to planning authorities, the bridge development is not only a response to connectivity gaps but also an essential step in climate-resilient infrastructure planning—especially in flood-prone or disconnected regions. With this targeted allocation, the government is advancing a decentralised and inclusive model of development that connects isolated areas with key services such as healthcare, education, and markets, fostering integrated rural growth.

Parallel to the bridge construction, the state highways department has sanctioned ₹6,929 crore for developing over 3,200 km of roads under various infrastructure schemes. Of this, ₹2,091.65 crore will be used to widen 1,378.36 km of roads under 619 individual projects, improving traffic flow and reducing bottlenecks. Another ₹1,646.5 crore has been earmarked to upgrade two-lane roads into four-lane highways under the Chief Minister Road Development Programme. Additionally, 19 bypass roads covering 97.31 km will be developed with a ₹978 crore allocation, easing urban congestion and offering safer alternatives for long-distance commuters. The remaining funds will support strengthening existing roads, developing industrial corridors, and enhancing road safety infrastructure. Authorities suggest this investment marks a critical phase in building a robust and future-ready road network capable of accommodating growing transport demands while also encouraging regional economic development through improved logistical support.
