Guwahati’s Bhagadatta Flyover-2 Opens After Record Nine-Month Construction, Boosting Local Connectivity

Guwahati has opened a major new flyover near Downtown Point, connecting Rukminigaon Road and Bormotoria Link Road, aimed at easing urban traffic and improving commuter mobility. Completed in just nine months using advanced composite structure technology, the ₹112 crore, four-lane Bhagadatta Flyover-2 marks a milestone in the city’s infrastructure push. Authorities say the project will ease congestion in the Super Market zone and also offer additional parking space to support surrounding commercial hubs.

The newly inaugurated Bhagadatta Flyover-2 in Guwahati exemplifies accelerated infrastructure delivery with a turnaround of just nine months—half the sanctioned timeframe. Spanning 660 metres and built at a cost of ₹112 crore, the flyover links critical arterial roads and is set to decongest a major commercial stretch near Downtown Point. Senior officials noted the use of composite structure technology, implemented by a national-level engineering consultancy, making this one of the fastest public infrastructure builds in the region. The flyover also includes an integrated understructure for vehicle parking to ease roadside congestion in the adjacent commercial district. Urban planners described the project as both a functional and symbolic advancement, honouring Guwahati’s cultural history by naming the structure after King Bhagadatta of ancient Kamarupa. The flyover is one of several upcoming transport interventions designed to accommodate Guwahati’s rising population and traffic volume, particularly in rapidly growing suburban nodes.

Alongside the Bhagadatta Flyover-2, the city is preparing for multiple new transport projects under a broader connectivity agenda. According to senior officials, work is either underway or planned for flyovers at Arya Nagar, Maligaon, and Radha Govinda Baruah Road, in addition to elevated corridors at Bharalumukh and airport-bound routes. Infrastructure expansion includes flyovers scheduled for completion in Noonmati-Chandmari and Cycle Factory zones early next year. Officials also outlined plans for a bridge connecting Guwahati to North Guwahati and a ring road around the city to reduce pressure on the inner core. A new airport terminal and elevated corridor to Jalukbari are slated for launch by the year-end. Economic planners assert that these expansions aim to retain local talent by boosting employment opportunities in the city. With several international firms reportedly showing interest in setting up operations, urban infrastructure is being positioned as a catalyst for both job creation and decongested urban growth.

The Bhagadatta Flyover-2 serves as both a transportation solution and a blueprint for fast-tracked urban development in Guwahati. Completed in record time with innovative engineering, the project addresses both traffic decongestion and commercial zone accessibility. As multiple infrastructure initiatives gather pace across the city, Guwahati is being positioned as a major employment and logistics hub in the Northeast. Authorities stress that these developments not only modernise the cityscape but also preserve cultural legacy through thoughtful naming and planning. With continued investments in road, rail, and air connectivity, Guwahati’s transformation into a transit-friendly and economically vibrant city appears well underway.
