Renewable Energy Booms: Solar Surpasses 17%, Overall at 31% in India

India’s energy landscape is undergoing a transformative shift, buoyed by robust government initiatives and policies driving the rapid expansion of renewable energy sources.

India’s energy landscape

A comprehensive suite of measures, encompassing financial incentives, subsidies, and regulatory frameworks, has been strategically deployed to accelerate the adoption of solar and other renewable energy technologies. These interventions have not only attracted substantial investments but have also spurred innovation, fostering an environment conducive to sustainable energy growth.

As of February 2024, India proudly boasts a renewable energy capacity that constitutes an impressive 31.45% of its total installed power capacity. Within this diversified renewable mix, solar energy emerges as a frontrunner, commanding over 17.41% of the overall installed power capacity, totalling 75.57 GW. Additionally, wind power contributes a noteworthy 10.4%, while small hydro and bio-power make up 1.2% and 2.5%, respectively. This eclectic blend underscores India’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels. India’s transition to renewable energy aligns seamlessly with its national objectives, reflecting its pledge to the global community in mitigating carbon emissions and combating climate change. This strategic shift towards cleaner energy sources is imperative for a rapidly developing nation like India, which seeks to meet the energy demands of its burgeoning population while conscientiously mitigating its environmental impact.

Despite coal’s continued dominance, comprising 48.6% of the total installed power capacity, India’s focus on non-fossil fuel sources is evident, collectively accounting for 44% of the installed capacity. Gas and lignite contribute 5.8% and 1.5%, respectively, while nuclear power stands at 1.7%, and large-hydro at 10.8%. The significant share of renewable energy underscores India’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The positive ramifications of India’s investments in renewable energy extend beyond environmental considerations, catalysing job creation, enhancing energy security, and fostering technological innovation. Moreover, the decentralised nature of many renewable energy projects empowers local communities, fostering inclusive development and socio-economic growth. Looking ahead, India’s trajectory in solar and renewable energy indicates sustained growth fuelled by technological advancements, supportive policies, and heightened environmental consciousness. The ambitious targets set by the Indian government for renewable energy capacity expansion underscore its unwavering commitment to realising a sustainable and resilient energy future. In conclusion, India’s strategic initiatives and policies have positioned it as a trailblazer in the global transition towards renewable energy adoption. With continued dedication to innovation and investment, India is poised to further advance its renewable energy goals, contributing significantly to a cleaner and greener future for generations to come.
