HSVP Proposes Relocation Of Marble Market For Sector 33 Metro Depot

A move spearheaded by the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) seeks to shift the Marble Market just 300 metres away to unlock 35 acres needed for the Sector‑33 metro depot. The plan, awaiting the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s approval, could be executed within three to four months, officials confirmed.

HSVP has petitioned the court to expedite hearings to relocate 61 Marble Market shops swiftly. A senior HSVP executive remarked that freeing up the land is critical to advance the ₹5,452 crore Gurugram Metro extension—27 elevated stations over 28.5 km—from Millennium City to Cyber Hub. Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) needs approximately 35 acres for depot operations in Sector 33. While 25 acres are already free from encumbrances, roughly 10 acres remain legally contested. The Marble Market occupies about 9.2 acres in Sector 33 and an additional 25 acres in adjacent Sector 34, split by a major road.

HSVP’s recent legal victories for Sector 33 land bolster their case, but finding consensus with traders remains essential. A Marble Market association spokesperson called for prompt resolution, suggesting a permanent relocation to a remapped Sector 34 site that reportedly has prior approval. Meanwhile, a GMRL official highlighted joint efforts by HSVP and GMDA to relocate utilities and finalize land transfer. “We are coordinating to ensure the depot and casting yard can commence without further delay,” they added.

Transport industry analysts maintain that depot infrastructure is vital for operational efficiencies and maintenance in rapid transit systems. Delaying depot land acquisition due to commercial encumbrances can lead to cost overruns and threaten project timelines. City planners also emphasise the need to balance urban development with the preservation of small traders’ livelihoods. The Marble Market relocation effort will test how authorities manage infrastructure expansion while maintaining an equitable approach to local businesses.
