Pune Metro, PMPML Plan Joint Bus Termini to Ease Swargate Traffic

Pune’s Maha Metro and PMPML have initiated a joint project to develop integrated bus termini near Swargate and Civil Court Metro stations to streamline traffic and improve commuter convenience. These proposed hubs aim to ease congestion caused by buses halting on arterial roads and to provide much-needed commuter amenities. The effort reflects a broader push toward seamless public transport integration, with construction already underway and land earmarked for multi-purpose development, including parking and public transit infrastructure.

At present, the lack of organised bus stops around Swargate and Civil Court areas leads to severe bottlenecks, with buses halting randomly on busy roads. Maha Metro and PMPML are now working together to develop structured bus terminuses next to operational Metro stations at these two key points. Officials have confirmed that land near Jedhe Chowk and along the irrigation canal in Swargate has been allotted for this purpose. This location will host not just a PMPML bus hub but also a parking area and commercial amenities. The aim is to establish designated entry and exit routes for buses, enhance commuter safety, and provide sheltered waiting zones with walking corridors. Authorities state that the initiative will help regulate traffic flow and improve access to public transport services. The project also mirrors a larger urban transit vision that blends multiple modes of travel in a centralised, commuter-friendly system.

In the Civil Court–Kamgar Putala stretch, where road space is routinely consumed by parked buses and informal stops, the proposed terminus is expected to relocate and consolidate PMPML services into a more functional space adjacent to the Metro line. Experts have stressed that unlike Metro stations, existing PMPML stops in the area lack basic infrastructure such as shelters, signboards, and accessible walkways. The upcoming terminus will address these gaps while catering to the high passenger volume travelling between PMC headquarters, court areas, and city suburbs. Additionally, integrating Metro and bus services under one transit roof will reduce travel fatigue, shorten last-mile connectivity gaps, and promote public transport use over private vehicles. Authorities have also indicated that space will be optimised to include pick-up bays, dedicated footpaths, and multi-modal transfer zones. The long-overdue integration reflects growing demand for cohesive mobility solutions in India’s expanding urban cores.

The coordinated effort between Maha Metro and PMPML to establish integrated bus termini in Swargate and Civil Court marks a turning point in Pune’s public transportation strategy. By prioritising connectivity, commuter safety, and traffic decongestion, the project aligns with broader goals of sustainable, multimodal urban mobility. With land secured, plans finalised, and construction initiated, the initiative promises to enhance commuter experience and reduce infrastructure friction at two of Pune’s busiest transport nodes. Experts believe such metro-bus integrations could serve as a replicable model for other Indian cities struggling with fragmented transit networks and rising vehicular pressure.
