Delhi Municipal Corporation To Hire New Waste Management Agencies In West South And Central Zones

Delhi Municipal Corporation is preparing to appoint new waste management agencies in the west south and central zones of the city in a long term effort to address persistent sanitation issues. The civic body is planning to finalize contracts for the next seven years covering waste collection transportation domestic hazardous waste handling and general sanitation.

The proposal comes as the term of the current contractor in the central zone is nearing its end following three extensions. An anticipatory approval has already been granted for a temporary six month contract in this zone. Officials confirmed that a proposal for a full seven year contract will be presented in the upcoming house meeting for administrative approval and budget clearance. Once cleared it will proceed to the standing committee for final rate and agency selection.

In the west zone the current contract is set to expire in June 2025 and officials have reported frequent complaints about service delays and inefficiencies. Until a new agency is appointed the current contract will be extended on a month to month basis. A similar timeline is expected in the south zone where the existing contract may be extended until April 2026. The estimated project cost stands at Rs 1123 crore for the west zone Rs 1170 crore for the south zone and Rs 932.5 crore for the central zone. The agencies will operate under a public private partnership model based on design build finance operate and transfer terms and will be responsible for transporting waste to designated MCD facilities and dumping sites.

Opposition leaders have criticized the ruling BJP led MCD for delaying the sanitation proposals. Aam Aadmi Party leaders expressed frustration that key issues had not been addressed in the first standing committee meeting despite earlier assurances. Officials emphasized that serious efforts are underway to engage reliable agencies in all affected zones and assured that regular monitoring will be conducted once new contractors are on board. He reiterated that maintaining sanitation across Delhi remains a top priority for the corporation.
