Coimbatore Flyover Work Triggers Diversions, City Braces for Peak Hour Disruptions

Coimbatore commuters are set to face traffic diversions from July 9 to 13 as authorities execute the final phase of the 10.1-km Avinashi Road flyover project. The reroutes come into effect to enable the installation of a steel composite girder over the railway bridge near Hopes College. To ensure safety and streamline construction, vehicles will be barred from travelling between Pioneer Mill Junction and Coimbatore Medical College Hospital during the overnight hours from 1 pm to 6 am.

As the Avinashi Road flyover nears its final construction phase, major traffic diversions have been announced to facilitate critical bridge work near Hopes College. From July 9 to 13, vehicles will be restricted between Pioneer Mill Junction and Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) from 1 pm to 6 am to accommodate the installation of a steel composite girder. All heavy vehicles and buses exiting the city must reroute through Lakshmi Mill Junction and proceed via Ramanathapuram, Singanallur, and the LT Bypass Road, or take the GP Signal-Ganapathy route to reach Avinashi Road. Two-wheelers and private cars must detour from Pioneer Mill Junction through Rottikadai Maidanam and Thanneerpandal. These measures are aimed at minimising congestion and maintaining construction pace. Experts warn that peak-hour slowdowns are expected despite the diversions, urging commuters to plan routes in advance. The flyover, once complete, is expected to significantly ease traffic bottlenecks on this key arterial stretch.

Inbound traffic to Coimbatore city will also follow revised routes during this temporary diversion window. Heavy vehicles and buses must enter via Thottipalayam through Kalapatti, Vilangurichi, and Saravanampatti. Alternatively, a U-turn from SITRA Junction through Kalapatti Road and Naal Road is permitted. Light vehicles entering the city are instructed to use CODISSIA Junction, CMC Junction, or SITRA Junction to access Avinashi Road via Tidel Park and Gandhi Nagar. Authorities have also advised vehicles heading toward Singanallur to avoid Avinashi Road entirely and instead use the LT Bypass through Chinthamanipudur. For those coming from Hopes, alternative routes include Perks School, GV Residency, and Fun Mall before joining Pioneer Mill Junction and reentering Avinashi Road. These diversions are critical to completing structural work without endangering public safety. Traffic monitoring will be enhanced during the implementation period, and residents are encouraged to follow digital advisories and local updates for smoother transit during this temporary reroute phase.

The temporary traffic diversions in Coimbatore, triggered by the final construction phase of the Avinashi Road flyover, mark a crucial step toward resolving the city’s long-standing traffic woes. While the reroutes may cause temporary inconvenience, authorities and transport experts believe the flyover’s completion will greatly improve east-west connectivity and ease congestion near Hopes College and CMCH. Commuters are urged to cooperate with the new traffic plans and remain updated on route changes through official channels. The city’s infrastructure push is progressing, and with public compliance, the transformation of Avinashi Road into a seamless travel corridor is within reach.
