Lucknow Transfers Gomti Nagar Sectors, Civic Body Gets ₹40 Crore Boost

In a major step towards improving basic civic amenities, four sectors of Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar Extension have officially been handed over to the Municipal Corporation, along with a ₹40.79 crore allocation for critical water and sewerage infrastructure. The transition marks a shift from the Lucknow Development Authority’s (LDA) control and aims to address longstanding deficiencies in the area’s sanitation and water supply systems, as identified during a recent joint inspection by civic departments.

The transfer of Sectors 1, 4, 6, and 25 of Gomti Nagar Extension to the Municipal Corporation marks a strategic move to decentralise infrastructure management and bring civic services closer to residents. The ₹40.79 crore fund earmarked by the LDA will support multiple upgrades including a new 3,000-metre water pipeline and a 2,500-metre sewer line to expand coverage for the fast-growing population in the region. Additionally, the plan includes the construction of five zonal pumping stations and four tube wells, alongside the repair of 26 existing wells and a severely damaged overhead tank. These upgrades are expected to resolve persistent issues of erratic water supply and sewer overflow, which have burdened residents for years. According to officials overseeing the transition, the Municipal Corporation and Jalkal Department will jointly supervise the implementation, aiming to complete the repair and installation phases in a phased but time-bound manner

As part of the extensive rehabilitation effort, the sanitation infrastructure will undergo a deep overhaul. This includes a 12-kilometre-long cleaning of existing sewer lines using advanced super suction machines, along with the repair of over 350 manholes to restore safe and efficient sewage management. These actions follow a joint inspection conducted earlier this year that identified both operational and structural issues across existing systems. Civic authorities now aim to address long-term neglect and improve service delivery standards in one of the city’s fastest-developing residential corridors. The project also reduces the administrative burden on the LDA, allowing it to refocus on planning and development while enabling the Municipal Corporation to take charge of day-to-day public service operations. Residents, who have often voiced frustration over poor infrastructure, now look to the civic body for swift execution and transparent communication as upgrades roll out.
