Mumbai To Fast Track Over 500 Stalled Slum Redevelopment Projects Soon

Maharashtra government has announced plans to accelerate the completion of over 500 stalled slum redevelopment projects across Mumbai. The announcement was made in the state legislature, with senior officials confirming that a high-level meeting under the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister will soon be convened to address long-standing bottlenecks.

At present, 517 slum rehabilitation projects under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) remain stalled due to legal, financial, and administrative hurdles. To break this deadlock, the government has activated the ‘Abhay Yojana’ scheme, which has facilitated the appointment of new developers for 23 of these projects. This intervention alone is expected to directly benefit over 25,000 slum dwellers by clearing the way for construction to resume. Officials stated that strategic institutional partnerships are being forged to ensure momentum is sustained. The SRA will collaborate with seven key government agencies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, CIDCO, MHADA, MMRDA, MSRDC, MIDC and MAHAPREIT. These partnerships are expected to provide land, infrastructure support, and policy guidance to navigate urban redevelopment complexities more effectively.

The move is seen as critical to solving Mumbai’s acute housing deficit, especially in densely populated areas such as Sion Koliwada, where slum redevelopment has been stalled for years. Legislators have also raised demands for similar attention to projects in other suburbs, pointing to the socio-economic strain on thousands of families living in unsafe and temporary housing conditions. In parallel, the state is investing in skill-building among marginalised communities. Under the ‘Mahajyoti’ programme, ₹203 crore has been requested for this year’s implementation, with targets to benefit 70,000 students, including 50 percent women. Officials confirmed that UPSC training schemes and digital skill programmes under this scheme had seen strong outcomes in previous years.

By committing to clear policy directives and institutional accountability, Maharashtra appears to be aligning its urban housing strategy with inclusive development goals aimed at ensuring safe, equitable, and sustainable living for all.
