Thane Opens Kasarvadavli Flyover to Ease Traffic on Ghodbunder Road

The much-awaited Kasarvadavli Flyover on Ghodbunder Road has opened to traffic, promising significant relief to daily commuters and freight vehicles travelling between Thane, Borivali, Vasai, JNPT, and Gujarat. The newly operational phase is expected to ease congestion between Waghbil and Gaimukh, a known traffic choke point.

The first phase of the flyover project, executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), includes a two-lane, 7.5-metre-wide flyover along with a 2×2 lane underpass. Together, the structure has been designed to accommodate nearly 73,000 passenger car units daily, addressing long-standing demands for improved east-west connectivity across this corridor. The project holds strategic value beyond Thane city limits. Ghodbunder Road, a critical arterial route, connects the Eastern Express Highway at Kapurbawdi to the Western Express Highway at Ghodbunder village, effectively linking central suburbs to the national highways that lead towards Gujarat. With growing pressure from both commercial and private traffic, the stretch has been witnessing routine bottlenecks, affecting commute times and logistics movement.

Officials involved in the project have stated that the left lane of the flyover is now operational, while the right lane construction will resume post-monsoon. The flyover is also expected to enhance intermodal transport as it aligns with Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Gaimukh), promising seamless transfers between road and rail networks once fully integrated. Authorities confirmed that the new infrastructure is part of a larger strategy to decongest Thane’s arterial corridors and ensure sustainable urban mobility. Plans are underway to replicate such models in other traffic-intensive zones, keeping in mind the city’s rapid urban expansion.

With this development, commuters and logistics operators can anticipate shorter travel times, lower fuel consumption, and smoother access to ports and industrial zones—bringing Thane a step closer to becoming a future-ready, well-connected satellite city.
