Prayagraj Airport has become the first domestic airport in Uttar Pradesh to house six aerobridges, marking a strategic infrastructure milestone. This expansion not only elevates passenger experience but places the airport ahead of other significant domestic hubs in the state. With this enhancement, Prayagraj now trails only Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, which has eight aerobridges. What sets this development apart is that Prayagraj operates exclusively as a domestic airport, while Lucknow handles international traffic. Comparatively, Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, despite accommodating a larger volume of flights, currently operates with only four aerobridges.
According to officials, the installation of six aerobridges positions Prayagraj ahead of key airports such as Varanasi, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, and Agra in terms of passenger boarding bridge infrastructure. Currently, four of these aerobridges are operational, while the remaining two are on standby for future growth in air traffic. Aerobridges, also known as Passenger Boarding Bridges (PBBs), are critical to modern airport operations, offering seamless, secure, and weather-proof transit between terminals and aircraft. Their presence significantly reduces passenger inconvenience, particularly for elderly, disabled, and high-volume event travellers.
Airport authorities expect the added capacity to serve as vital support during large-scale events such as the Maha Kumbh 2031, which is anticipated to bring an influx of domestic tourists and spiritual pilgrims. Officials stated that the enhancement would help decongest operations during peak seasons and foster a more sustainable passenger flow. The strategic development is being interpreted as a move towards boosting Prayagraj’s positioning in India’s civil aviation ecosystem. With a robust infrastructure backbone now in place, the airport is prepared to absorb rising demand for regional connectivity while aligning with government plans to push air travel accessibility in Tier-II cities.
While flight volume remains moderate at present, the enhanced infrastructure sends a clear message about Prayagraj’s long-term aviation ambitions. This development not only addresses present operational efficiency but sets the stage for future scalability without the need for major structural overhauls. The move reinforces the city’s growing significance within Uttar Pradesh’s transport and tourism map, and with increased air passenger demand forecast over the next decade, Prayagraj’s proactive planning places it at the centre of the region’s next wave of urban and economic growth.
