Indias Renewable Energy Soars as Solar Capacity Grows 4000 Percent Piyush Goyal Sets 500 GW Target

India has achieved an extraordinary 4000% increase in installed solar capacity, reaching a cumulative renewable energy strength of 227 GW, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced at the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025. Addressing industry leaders and policymakers, the Minister declared India as potentially the first G20 nation to fulfil its Paris Agreement commitments well ahead of time.

Goyal highlighted transformative initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, aimed at equipping one crore homes with rooftop solar, and the PM Kusum Yojana that supports solar irrigation across India’s agrarian economy. He noted that the country’s solar photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity has expanded 38-fold in a decade, while photovoltaic cell production has surged 21 times. The government is also pushing ahead with a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund, designed to catalyse innovation in advanced battery technologies, solid-state storage, and circular energy systems.

At the core of India’s clean energy journey is its commitment to developing robust energy storage. Goyal stressed the need to build resilient supply chains, adopt advanced storage technologies, and focus on the entire energy value chain—from raw materials to recycling. Battery swapping infrastructure, pumped hydro storage, and green hydrogen were all cited as pillars of India’s future-ready energy ecosystem.

Praising the IESW platform for uniting sectors across storage, e-mobility, and green hydrogen, Goyal urged stakeholders to scale up operations and localise manufacturing to ensure energy sovereignty. With a target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, India is setting the pace globally, positioning itself as a clean energy powerhouse with sustainability, affordability, and innovation at its core.
