Maharashtra Government Approves Merger Of Pune Khadki Cantonments With PMC

Maharashtra has approved the merger of the Pune and Khadki cantonment boards with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), a major move to boost civic infrastructure and streamline development. Announced during a high-level monsoon session meeting, the state government, led by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, revealed that this step aligns with the Union government’s broader policy to integrate cantonment areas with nearby urban bodies for better service delivery.

Aurangabad’s cantonment will join the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation, while Deolali and Ahmednagar cantonments will be reconstituted as independent municipal councils. Kamptee cantonment is set to merge with Yerkhada Nagar Panchayat. However, Dehu Road Cantonment has been notably excluded from this wave of restructuring. According to the government, Dehu Road will remain independent due to its security and strategic relevance.

Fadnavis stated that many residents in these cantonment zones have long struggled with limited civic amenities, which has spurred demands for integration. “Each cantonment has unique requirements and challenges. This merger will resolve issues related to taxes, electricity, water supply, and financial management, in line with Ministry of Defence guidelines,” he said.

With this administrative overhaul, the Maharashtra government aims to enhance governance, improve infrastructure, and bring uniformity in civic services across growing urban areas.
