Mumbai Completes 60 percent Of Sewri Worli Connector Work Plans Parallel Bridge As Elphinstone Flyover Faces Demolition

Mumbai has achieved 60% progress on the critical Sewri-Worli Connector, which will seamlessly link the Atal Setu, the coastal road, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. As the city gears up for enhanced traffic connectivity, the British-era Elphinstone Road flyover—connecting Prabhadevi and Parel stations—faces imminent demolition due to its deteriorating condition.

To offset commuter disruption, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced the construction of a parallel bridge. This new infrastructure will connect the Elphinstone Bridge with Currey Road and Lower Parel, aiming to maintain traffic flow and reduce congestion in South Mumbai during the transition.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading the replacement project, which will link Lalbaug, Prabhadevi, and Lower Parel. It will span both the Western and Central Railway lines, starting from the junction of N. M. Joshi Marg and Ganpatrao Kadam Marg and ending at Dr B. R. Ambedkar Road and Dr Ernest Borges Road. The bridge will pass through National Textile Corporation (NTC) land, which is currently awaiting a No-Objection Certificate from the Union Ministry of Textiles.

However, the plan has hit a local snag. Residents of two buildings near the Elphinstone flyover have rejected MHADA’s relocation terms, demanding compensation based on revised Floor Space Index (FSI) and housing within a one-kilometre radius.

Despite the resistance, the state government assures that all necessary approvals are being actively pursued and that efforts will be made to minimise disruptions for daily commuters, office-goers, students, and patients in the busy Lower Parel-Prabhadevi corridor.
