Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a comprehensive demolition and reconstruction drive for seven structurally compromised bridges across Malad and Kandivali. The ₹26.43 crore infrastructure project targets both foot and vehicular bridges that have been deemed unsafe based on structural audit assessments conducted last year. The initiative covers the P North (Malad) and R South (Kandivali) administrative wards and includes the reconstruction of three vehicular bridges and four foot over bridges (FOBs).
These structures were flagged following detailed inspections and re-evaluation by engineering consultancies engaged by the civic body. Designs and cost estimations were finalised thereafter to enable timely intervention. Several of the foot over bridges, including those near Mahalaxmi Dairy Farm, Hanuman Nagar, and Kamaraj Chawl in Kandivali East, had already been fully shut to pedestrians owing to serious safety hazards. Others, such as the FOB near Narwane Transit Camp and those connecting Ramnagar Chawl and Gaodevi Road, remain partially accessible under strict supervision. Vehicular bridges near Surabhi Complex in Kandivali West and Appa Pada at the Malad-Kandivali East border have also seen restricted access.
According to civic officials, the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder after a competitive tendering process. The executing agency quoted 11 percent above the base estimate of ₹19.66 crore, with the final cost negotiated at ₹26.43 crore. The construction phase is expected to be completed within 24 months. In view of the upcoming reconstruction activity, traffic diversions will be implemented in consultation with the traffic police. Officials have assured that alternate arrangements will be communicated in advance to minimise public inconvenience.
The project aligns with Mumbai’s broader goal of enhancing urban infrastructure while promoting sustainable and equitable mobility. It also reflects the city’s intent to act pre-emptively on safety risks rather than react to structural failures. While the reconstruction may cause short-term disruptions, the long-term benefits of safer and more accessible mobility infrastructure offer a much-needed upgrade for one of Mumbai’s most densely populated suburban belts.
