Secunderabad Cantonment Approves Lake Beautification Advances Corridor

Secunderabad The Cantonment Board has granted in-principle approval for the rejuvenation and beautification of Ramannakunta Lake in New Bowenpally, marking a significant stride towards transforming the neglected water body into a recreational and ecological hub. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has proposed a detailed plan for its revival, encompassing desilting, bund strengthening, stone revetment, and the creation of amenities like open gyms, children’s play areas, and a walking track. A No Objection Certificate from the Army, under whose jurisdiction the lake falls, is now awaited. Separately, the Board also approved the installation of open gym equipment across ten proposed sites in various residential colonies and parks, aiming to enhance public health infrastructure.

The Board also advanced discussions on a Memorandum of Understanding with HMDA regarding infrastructure development in lieu of direct cash compensation for Defence land. Instead of a ₹303.62 crore payment, the State Government has proposed undertaking development works such as underground sewer upgrades, strengthening of Picket and Hasmathpet nalas, and stormwater drain construction across various Cantonment wards. An escrow account, as mandated by a recent Ministry of Defence corrigendum, will meticulously track expenditures and project milestones, with HMDA bearing responsibility for any cost overruns. This move aims to streamline large-scale urban infrastructure projects.

On the public health front, the Board is expected to finalize an MoU with a private eye hospital to offer cashless eye treatment to its employees and their dependents. This initiative aligns with Central Government directives, allowing treatment at empanelled hospitals at CGHS rates, thereby eliminating the need for upfront payments. These comprehensive discussions held during Tuesday’s Board meeting signify a concerted effort towards enhancing urban infrastructure, public health services, and overall civic administration within the Cantonment area, fostering a more sustainable and equitable urban environment for its residents.
