Kolkata Signs MoU With PS Group to Redevelop and Beautify Nimtalla Ghat

Authorities in Kolkata have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a leading private real estate firm for the comprehensive redevelopment of Nimtalla Ghat — one of the city’s most culturally and spiritually significant riverfront sites. The agreement, signed between the port authority and PS Group, a prominent realty developer, is part of a broader initiative to restore and modernise Kolkata’s historic ghats along the Hooghly River under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandates. The project, officials confirmed, is designed to enhance accessibility, aesthetics, and cultural vibrancy while preserving the sanctity and ecological integrity of the riverbank.

According to officials from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK), which oversees a large part of Kolkata’s riverfront infrastructure, the partnership with PS Group aims to transform the Nimtalla Immersion Ghat into a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive space. The private partner will carry out the civil works and landscape development, while the port authority will provide regulatory clearances and logistical support to ensure smooth execution. The redevelopment blueprint reportedly includes upgraded sanitation, lighting, eco-sensitive landscaping, and improved pedestrian access to accommodate thousands of daily visitors, especially during major cultural and religious festivals. In keeping with sustainable design principles, materials used will be locally sourced and environmentally safe, with an emphasis on energy efficiency and waste management.

PS Group officials stated that the Ghat holds deep emotional and historical relevance for the city’s residents, especially as one of the primary immersion sites during Durga Puja. The redevelopment effort, they said, will not only improve the visitor experience but also protect the river ecosystem from unmanaged human activity. The upgraded Nimtalla Ghat will continue to be maintained by the port authority after the completion of the project, reflecting a growing model of public-private collaboration in managing civic infrastructure. This model has gained momentum in Kolkata as stakeholders seek to revitalise ageing urban assets without compromising on cultural authenticity or environmental health.

A few days prior, a similar MoU was signed for the redevelopment of Kumartuli Ghat with another major corporate group, reinforcing the city’s commitment to restoring more than 50 ghats that line the riverbanks of Kolkata and neighbouring Howrah. As cities across India grapple with climate change, river pollution, and disappearing public spaces, Kolkata’s ghat redevelopment drive could serve as a model for other urban centres striving to balance heritage preservation with modern infrastructure. While the timeline for the Nimtalla Ghat project has yet to be formally announced, stakeholders emphasised that transparent implementation and active community involvement will be key to its success.
