Pune has marked a major milestone in its urban mobility journey as the Purple Line of the Pune Metro becomes fully operational, now connecting Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate. With this strategic corridor finally linking the northwestern suburbs to central Pune, commuters can expect faster, greener, and more accessible daily travel across the city.
Developed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) and facilitated by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the 16.6-kilometre corridor offers a crucial blend of elevated and underground stretches. It interconnects key residential, institutional, and commercial hubs, making it one of the city’s most pivotal infrastructure initiatives. The Purple Line currently features 11 operational stations, including Tukaram Nagar, Bhosari, Khadki, and Shivaji Nagar. The final three stations—Budhwar Peth, Mandai, and Swargate—are nearing completion and are anticipated to open shortly, rounding out the route’s strategic extension. Once completed, this metro line will enable seamless access to Pune’s iconic heritage areas and busy market districts, reducing surface traffic congestion and air pollution in the process.
The Civil Court station along this corridor is poised to become a significant interchange hub, facilitating passenger transitions between the Purple Line, the Aqua Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi), and the under-construction Line 3 connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar. This multi-line integration is set to enhance the overall efficiency and reach of the metro network, ultimately reducing dependency on private vehicles. City officials say the complete operation of the Purple Line will drastically shorten commute times across critical north-south routes and encourage the shift towards a more sustainable public transport system. Additionally, the corridor is expected to alleviate congestion on heavily used arterial roads such as the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway, where daily vehicular volumes often lead to long delays and increased emissions.
In alignment with Pune’s broader urban development goals, the expansion of the metro network demonstrates a commitment to smart, inclusive, and environmentally-conscious infrastructure.
