Mohali Officers Take Charge to Transform City Roads, Ensure Cleanliness

In a bold move to transform road infrastructure and public spaces, Mohali officials have been directly tasked with maintaining city streets, aiming to eliminate potholes, ensure cleanliness, and deliver safer, well-lit urban roads. As part of the state-led cleanliness mission, senior government officials will now oversee specific stretches, with mandates for weekly inspections and accountability. This initiative signals a significant shift toward grassroots-level implementation of urban governance in Punjab, centred on citizen trust, ecological upkeep, and district-wide coordination.

Officials have been assigned road sections across Mohali’s urban and semi-urban belts to implement routine inspections and ensure high standards of maintenance. According to the administration, each officer will supervise the condition of roads, address sanitation lapses, and push for timely interventions—be it repairing damaged stretches, repainting markings, or restoring streetlights. While infrastructure often falls through the cracks in bureaucratic handovers, this initiative introduces a decentralised monitoring model where top-level officers are responsible for civic performance on the ground, reflecting a people-first, visible governance strategy. At the heart of the move lies a call for civic transformation rooted in accountability and trust. Each official has been instructed to report unresolved issues to higher authorities until complete resolution is ensured. The approach brings urgency and visibility to road upkeep and everyday sanitation—areas that have long plagued cities with patchy delivery.

From improving pedestrian access to managing daily waste pickup, the responsibilities now span across essential services that directly impact quality of life. It also aims to counter urban neglect and habitual administrative delays that often lead to public outcry. To support these goals, the Regional Transport Authority of SAS Nagar has been designated as the nodal agency to monitor district-level coordination, maintain performance data, and facilitate timely communication among stakeholders. The agency will not only track road conditions but also act as a central hub for mission logistics, helping streamline operations between development authorities and municipal bodies. The administration’s emphasis on digital tracking and two-inspection-per-week protocol suggests a hybrid civic model combining manual oversight with data-backed interventions for long-term upkeep.

This district-led approach marks a shift toward participatory urban management, in which governance is no longer distant or abstract but visibly present on every street corner. By linking official responsibilities directly to city infrastructure, the mission redefines civic roles as custodians of public space. While its long-term success hinges on consistency and transparency, it serves as a model for cities across India to rethink how roads, sanitation, and sustainability intersect with leadership and public well-being.
