Bengaluru Government May Finalise Second Airport Site This Month

The Karnataka government is moving rapidly towards finalising a location for Bengaluru’s long-anticipated second international airport, with an official decision likely by the end of July. The state’s infrastructure development department has submitted a proposal to the central airport authority, shortlisting three potential sites in the southern region of the city. The proposal, which is currently under review, comes amid rising political and administrative interest around the location of the new aviation hub. According to government officials, the decision-making process is being expedited, with the final site expected to be announced within a fortnight.

While several locations have been under consideration, the shortlisted sites include areas in and around Bidadi, Harohalli, and Shiradi. The central authority is assessing these based on technical, environmental, and logistical factors, as well as connectivity potential. The state’s move is seen as an effort to strengthen the city’s aviation capacity, which is under strain due to the ever-increasing passenger load at Kempegowda International Airport. Senior officials in the infrastructure ministry noted that the final decision would consider global examples, such as the Noida and Navi Mumbai greenfield airport developments. These comparisons aim to ensure that Bengaluru’s second airport integrates sustainable planning and climate resilience from its inception.

Meetings between state and central authorities are scheduled for the third week of July, where the airport project will be a top agenda item. Officials have indicated that the meeting will aim to align Karnataka’s proposal with national aviation priorities, including zero-carbon infrastructure, smart passenger management, and seamless intermodal connectivity. The selection of the second airport’s site holds significance not just for Karnataka’s capital but also for India’s broader push to decentralise aviation infrastructure. A new airport in Bengaluru would catalyse economic activity in the southern region, support population growth, and boost resilience in emergency and high-traffic scenarios.

Stakeholders involved in the site evaluation process are also considering the region’s environmental impact, land acquisition feasibility, and long-term scalability. Experts suggest that whichever site is finalised, the airport must support next-generation aviation technologies and renewable energy targets. With five international airports already operating in the state, the second for Bengaluru would mark a strategic step towards making Karnataka a major aviation hub. Officials emphasise that timely decision-making and robust planning are essential to meet projected demands and reduce over-reliance on existing infrastructure.

As Bengaluru continues to expand as a global innovation and investment centre, a second international airport is no longer a distant ambition but an immediate necessity. The clarity expected by the end of July could set the stage for one of India’s most advanced and sustainably built aviation facilities.
