Nashik Roads To Be Upgraded For Simhastha Kumbh Mela

Nashik is proactively enhancing its urban infrastructure, particularly city roads and sanitation systems, in anticipation of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled between 2026 and 2028. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has prioritized extensive development, aiming to re-lay and widen 200 kilometers of major city roads to accommodate the anticipated influx of millions of devotees. This significant upgrade is part of a larger 15,000 crore comprehensive plan submitted to the state government for approval, ensuring the city is fully prepared for the mega-event and offers a seamless experience for pilgrims and visitors alike.

Recognizing the urgency of the preparations, the state’s Chief Minister had previously instructed the civic body to prioritize projects with a two-year completion timeline, ensuring critical infrastructure is ready well in advance. In response to this directive, the NMC has successfully finalized a private agency to undertake vital sewage management works. These essential sanitation projects, estimated to cost around 1,475 crore, include the construction of new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), the establishment of Sewage Pumping Stations, and the crucial diversion of sewage from 22 nullahs into nearby STPs. This comprehensive approach to wastewater management aims to ensure a hygienic environment for the massive congregation and protect the river ecosystem.

Additionally, the civic body has initiated the tender process for the construction of five new bridges and the critical strengthening of the existing Gadge Maharaj bridge, which are vital for managing pedestrian and vehicular traffic during the Mela. A civic body official confirmed that a priority list for the roads slated for re-laying during the Kumbh Mela has been prepared, and the tender process for these road works is expected to be completed shortly, expediting the start of construction. Last month, the NMC had formally sought 4,000 crore from the state government specifically for these proposed major Kumbh Mela projects; however, these crucial funds are yet to be received. Nashik is one of four cities in India that hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years, with the last grand event held in 2015.
