Mumbai Set To Open Final Phase Of SCLR, Cutting Travel Time By 45 Minutes

Mumbai is on the cusp of a major infrastructural enhancement with the impending opening of the final phase of the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) Extension. This critical development by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is poised to significantly alleviate East-West connectivity challenges, promising a substantial reduction in travel time. The project is a vital step towards fostering a more efficient, sustainable, and equitable urban environment by streamlining commuter flows and reducing vehicular emissions.

The SCLR Extension, a long-anticipated project, is nearing its complete operational status. While earlier sections have been facilitating traffic for some time, the final segment—a northbound flyover arm directly linking to the Western Express Highway (WEH)—is in its concluding stages of work. This strategic addition is specifically designed to bypass notorious bottlenecks at the Hans Bhugra Marg-WEH signal and the perennially congested Vakola junction. By eliminating these choke points, the new elevated arm will provide a smoother and faster commute for motorists travelling from Chembur and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) towards the western suburbs.

The impact on urban mobility is projected to be substantial. The new flyover is expected to slash travel time between Chembur and BKC by an impressive 45 minutes, a significant gain for daily commuters and businesses alike. Furthermore, the journey between the Eastern and Western Express Highways is anticipated to be cut by approximately 35 minutes. Beyond mere time savings, this enhanced connectivity promises improved access to key economic hubs like BKC and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, leading to tangible benefits such as reduced fuel consumption and a corresponding decrease in vehicular emissions, aligning with the city’s eco-friendly aspirations.

A highlight of this engineering feat is a 215-metre-long cable-stayed bridge, soaring 25 metres above the Western Express Highway and spanning 10.5 metres in width. Notably, this structure holds the distinction of being Asia’s first cable-stayed bridge to feature a 100-metre sharp curvature.
