Kerala Boosts Green Energy With Landmark Tata NHPC Battery Storage Project

Kerala is set to significantly enhance its green energy infrastructure with a landmark battery storage project. Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited TPREL has signed its inaugural Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement BESPA with NHPC Limited for this thirty megawatt one hundred twenty megawatt hour facility. Located in Areacode, this initiative marks a crucial step towards bolstering the states power supply. The project aims to integrate more renewable energy sources into its grid system.

The project was secured by Tata Power Renewable under NHPCs Battery Energy Storage System BESS Tranche I tender through a competitive bidding process. Designed to address peak power demand and enhance grid flexibility, the battery storage system will also play a vital role in integrating renewable energy sources into the existing grid. The agreement spans a tenure of twelve years, with the project slated for commissioning within fifteen months from the date of signing, ensuring a relatively swift deployment of this essential energy solution.

This initiative is part of a larger plan by NHPC to develop one hundred twenty five megawatt five hundred megawatt hour of standalone battery storage capacity across Kerala. This comprehensive development is being implemented under a Tariff Based Competitive Bidding framework, supported by Viability Gap Funding. The project aligns seamlessly with the Government of Indias ambitious target of achieving five hundred gigawatts of non fossil fuel capacity by two thousand thirty, underscoring the national commitment to sustainable energy transition and a greener future.

This project marks Tata Power Renewables first win in the standalone BESS segment, significantly expanding its renewable energy portfolio to ten point nine gigawatts. This includes five point six gigawatts of operational capacity and five point three gigawatts under various stages of development. Such projects are vital for grid stability and the widespread adoption of intermittent renewable energy sources.
