Delhi Hit by Heavy Rain and Flooding Airport Issues Advisory as Orange Alert Continues

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced significant disruption on Tuesday morning as heavy rainfall lashed several areas, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the day, forecasting continued showers across the capital. Commuters faced considerable challenges, with key stretches in Lutyens’ Delhi and parts of South and Southwest Delhi reporting extensive water accumulation.

Areas like Janpath Road were heavily submerged, with reports of water entering shops, and the road connecting Janpath to Jantar Mantar also partially under water. These affected stretches, under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) jurisdiction, are less than 500 meters from Parliament House, highlighting the intensity of the downpour. While Gurugram also reported light rain, the primary impact was felt within Delhi.

The minimum temperature in Delhi settled at 26 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of year, with the maximum expected to reach around 35 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity was recorded at 83% at 8:30 AM. Delhi Airport authorities have issued an advisory, urging passengers to check flight statuses and allow extra time for travel to the airport to avoid delays caused by potential waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

The IMD’s forecast indicates that light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely to continue through the week until July 28. Despite the heavy rain, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the ‘moderate’ category, registering 103, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This wet spell marks a significant monsoon activity for the region.
