Authorities overseeing the Noida International Airport project, in collaboration with the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration, have prohibited unauthorised construction within a 10-kilometre radius of the upcoming Jewar Airport. This directive aims to mitigate operational risks and ensure planned development around this vital infrastructure asset. Only buildings with requisite approvals, including No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and approved building maps, will be permitted. The term ‘unauthorised’ specifically refers to constructions that fail to comply with airport height restrictions or lack the mandatory NOC from the AAI. Officials emphasise that any construction on plots, particularly in non-notified village areas or ‘abadi’ land, without pre-approved maps, not only constitutes an illegal act but also poses significant safety risks, particularly if multiple floors are added without regulatory oversight. The necessity for these stringent controls was highlighted during a recent Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC) meeting, where potential risks to aircraft operations within the 10-kilometre radius were extensively discussed. Hazards such as bird activity, stray animals, and unregulated structures pose direct threats to flight safety. Consequently, measures proposed include identifying and acting against buildings constructed without NOCs, regulating new construction, conducting joint surveys with local administration, and establishing an obstacle control committee to monitor and remove any physical obstructions endangering air traffic. Industry experts clarify that this is not a blanket prohibition on all construction but a targeted regulatory exercise aimed at curbing the proliferation of unapproved structures.
