Delhi Flyover Repair to Disrupt Commute Between Delhi Noida and Faridabad

Delhi is set for significant traffic disruptions as the Public Works Department (PWD) resumes major repair work on the Sarita Vihar flyover, a vital artery connecting southeast Delhi with Noida and Faridabad. The carriageway from Badarpur towards Ashram is scheduled for a partial shutdown starting Friday until August 8, which is expected to cause considerable traffic congestion along Mathura Road and its surrounding areas. This extensive repair, the first major overhaul in 24 years for the flyover, follows multiple postponements due to various factors, including rising pollution levels, general elections, and the recent Kanwar Yatra.

PWD officials have confirmed that the long-pending repair work, which commenced in October 2024 but was temporarily halted, is now back on schedule. The initial phase, involving repairs on the Ashram to Badarpur carriageway, has been successfully completed. Attention now shifts to the opposite direction, which will undoubtedly lead to bottlenecks for daily commuters. To manage the anticipated congestion, Delhi Traffic Police have deployed approximately 50 additional personnel and issued detailed advisories outlining traffic curbs and alternative routes for motorists navigating the affected stretch.

Commuters traveling from Badarpur in southeast Delhi towards south Delhi and onward to Faridabad will bear the brunt of the traffic congestion near Mathura Road. Traffic officials anticipate hour-long jams in localities such as Sarita Vihar, New Friends Colony, Okhla, and Govindpuri. For those moving from the Badarpur border towards Ashram via Mathura Road, two alternative routes are suggested: one involves using MB Road to proceed towards Pul Prahladpur and Lal Kuan, then turning right onto Maa Anandmai Marg, passing through Crowne Plaza and Govindpuri, before making a right turn towards the Modi Mill flyover to reach Mathura Road and then Ashram. The other option advises using the slip road adjacent to the Sarita Vihar flyover, turning left for Okhla Road, then a right at Crowne Plaza, continuing along Maa Anandmai Marg and Govindpuri, and finally turning right towards the Modi Mill flyover to rejoin Mathura Road.

Additionally, the movement of heavy and commercial vehicles on Mathura Road from Badarpur towards the Sarita Vihar flyover will be restricted as required to facilitate smoother traffic flow. This period of repair work coincides with previous traffic issues experienced around Kalindi Kunj, Mathura Road, and Sarita Vihar due to restrictions imposed for the Kanwar Yatra, further exacerbating commuting challenges for an additional two weeks.

The Public Works Department aims to complete the structural rehabilitation and repair work by August 8, ensuring the flyover’s long-term safety and efficiency. Commuters are strongly advised to plan their journeys meticulously, consider using public transport, and strictly adhere to all traffic signage and directions from police personnel to minimize inconvenience.
