Pune Ajit Pawar Unveils 75‑Km Railway Line to Ease Traffic

Pune, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has unveiled an ambitious railway infrastructure plan for Pune, proposing a new 75-kilometre railway line aimed at significantly reducing traffic congestion and bolstering industrial connectivity across the region. This strategic expansion is poised to enhance sustainable urban mobility, facilitate economic growth, and contribute to the development of more eco-friendly and equitable cities by promoting efficient public and freight transport.

The proposed railway line will extend from Talegaon to Chakan, then proceed to Wagholi, Uruli, and finally connect to the Solapur-Pune Road. A separate, crucial link will also integrate Miraj Road with the existing Miraj railway line. To expedite the project’s execution, instructions for land acquisition have already been issued to the Collector’s office, indicating a swift move towards implementation. This comprehensive network is designed to serve as a backbone for regional development, easing the burden on existing road infrastructure.

A significant aspect of this expansion includes the establishment of two new railway stations: New Talegaon Station and Uruli Station. Furthermore, another railway corridor has been proposed, stretching from Wagholi to Ahilyanagar. This route is strategically planned to pass through key areas such as Vadhu Budruk, Shikrapur, Koregaon Bhima, Ranjangaon, Pimpalner, and Tupewadi, incorporating a total of eight new stations along its path. This granular expansion ensures wider reach and accessibility for both commuters and industrial freight.

The primary objective of these new railway lines extends beyond mere traffic alleviation. As Deputy Chief Minister Pawar stated, they will “support faster connectivity for industrial hubs.” The corridor is specifically designed to serve major industrial zones, including Ranjangaon MIDC, Chas, and parts of Ahmednagar district. Improved rail connectivity for industries translates into more efficient logistics, reduced transportation costs, and a lower carbon footprint due to the inherent energy efficiency of rail freight compared to road transport. This aligns with the vision of fostering zero-net-carbon industrial ecosystems.

This substantial investment in railway infrastructure is expected to catalyse economic activity across the Pune region. Enhanced commuter convenience will improve the quality of life for residents, while robust industrial connectivity will attract further investments and generate employment opportunities. By providing a reliable and sustainable mode of transport, the project contributes to equitable access to economic opportunities and services, fostering inclusive growth. This forward-looking approach positions Pune as a model for integrated urban and industrial development, prioritising both environmental sustainability and socio-economic prosperity.
