The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to implement revised toll collection at the Madukkarai Toll Plaza from August 1st, following the handover of the 27-kilometre Coimbatore bypass from Larsen & Toubro to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This transition marks a new phase in the management of a critical urban artery, aiming to streamline traffic flow and ensure efficient road upkeep. The move is poised to impact regional logistics and commuting patterns, contributing to a more organised and sustainable transport infrastructure.
The 27-kilometre Coimbatore bypass, stretching from Neelambur to Madukkarai along National Highway 544, was developed under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model by Larsen & Toubro. Upon the conclusion of L&T’s contract, the central government assumed control, entrusting toll operations to the NHAI. Under the new arrangement, NHAI will consolidate operations to a single toll plaza near Madukkarai, effectively shutting down five of the six booths previously managed by the private infrastructure major. This consolidation is expected to reduce bottlenecks and improve the efficiency of toll collection.
The revised toll fee structure, approved by NHAI through a letter dated July 10, 2025, will adhere to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. The new rates will vary based on vehicle category, with specific provisions designed to offer concessions. Private vehicles registered within a 20-kilometre radius of the toll plaza will be eligible for a monthly pass at a subsidised rate of ₹350, fostering local commuter convenience.
Furthermore, commercial vehicles registered in Coimbatore district will benefit from discounts ranging from ₹20 for light vehicles to ₹115 for oversized vehicles, promoting regional trade efficiency. To encourage smoother traffic flow and reward frequent users, return journeys completed within 24 hours will receive a 25% discount, while single journeys made within a month from the payment date will be offered a 33% concession. Commercial vehicles not operating under a national permit will also be eligible for up to a 50% discount, aiming to support local businesses.
The bypass section, featuring a 0.645-kilometre structure with two-lane paved shoulders, has an equivalent user fee length of 26.78 kilometres. The toll collection strategy is designed to recover 40% of the total capital cost incurred on the stretch, balancing infrastructure development with user charges. While the bypass has historically faced issues with traffic congestion and toll-related concerns, the new arrangement under NHAI is expected to facilitate streamlined traffic flow and ensure consistent road maintenance, contributing to a more reliable and eco-friendly transport corridor.
